If you’re a PC gamer, chances are you have, or have had, Xfire installed on your PC at one time or another. While today it overlaps slightly with Steam, Xfire has long been the #1 choice of gamers wishing to interact with one another in a gaming environment.
Intel Capital has seen the value in the project and its large userbase, and has provided a tidy $4 million in funding. Xfire has also done some internal changes, adding three new executive staff. Previous director of monetization Mark Donovan joins as president, with Juston Brommel as CMO and Autumn Radtke the director of business development.
Donovan clearly has a lot of passion for the company, saying, “Xfire is already the most advanced social service for gamers with group chat, group voice, and user generated content sharing tools like live game broadcasting.
“Think of Xfire as Facebook meets Skype for gamers. This round of capital is allowing us to make many enhancements starting with an entirely new look for the Xfire website and chat application. Intel Capital’s funding will help us take what is already the leader in the space to the next level by continuing to build the team and quickly iterating on our product.”
Based in California, the company was acquired by Titan Gaming in August 2010. After this investment, however, Xfire will be an independent operator.
With service available in over a hundred countries, Intel Capital must feel like it is a reasonably safe investment.
