The Verge responds to irate gamers

18 October 2011

As you’ve no doubt read on Mygaming, a clip of local gaming show The Verge, in which hostess Lalla Hirayama “interviews” gamers at the rAge 2011 LAN event, has upset the South African gaming community.

In the video, Lalla is seen interviewing attendees of the rAge LAN in what many gamers feel is a condescending manner, if MyGaming forum comments and anything to go by.

The video includes gems such as, “This is where kids come; they bring their PCs, their hard-drives, and alles. They camp out for the whole weekend, and they play…games. Jah neh, no comment…no comment.”

Threads discussing the incident have popped up on various South African gaming forums, with users venting their frustration at the patronising video clip. The original clip of the show was removed from the Vuzu.TV YouTube channel.

“The Verge News” Facebook page also lit up with comments, which were initially deleted before the sheer number of complaint posts seemingly overwhelmed the page admins.

The official response from The Verge, posted on their Facebook page and in the Mygaming forums reads:

“The Verge is sorry to read that some viewers were upset by the light-hearted nature of one of our thirteen reports from rAge 2011. As an official media partner of of[sic] the expo, we covered every single angle of the event, including running a joint stand with the organisers, NAG. The detailed nature of our reports and strong all-round presence should indicate a healthy respect for gaming culture and the people who participate in it. Vuzu is an entertainment channel and we think humour is an important aspect of that, so hopefully the small number of viewers unhappy with the LAN report will see the lighter side of things.”

Jah neh, no comment, no comment.
