World of Warcraft talent system to be replaced

23 October 2011

World of Warcraft fanatics the world over have a lot to be excited about for the upcoming expansion, Mists of Panderia, most significantly being able to punch people in the face with a big cuddly panda in a silly hat.

However, Blizzard has a lot more to unveil about the expansion at their annual information dump, Blizzcon. Cuddly pandas aside, WoW will also be getting a complete overhaul of how players develop their characters, replacing the talent system that’s been in place since launch.

The talent system did see significant changes in the 2010 Cataclysm expansion, but WoW systems designer Greg Street has now said at Blizzcon that the team wasn’t satisfied, and felt the changes needed to be more impactful.

The aim is to streamline the process, removing a load of insignificant talents, creating a more simple and fun experience, but one that is also more personal and playstyle specific.

It will be interesting to see how the community reacts to such a significant change to the game.

If there’s one thing history has taught us, it’s that change is generally not something people react to well, oftentimes even when the change is beneficial.

However, this is Blizzard, and they do garner more faith than most. Maybe everyone is too excited about Kung Fu panda to care anyway.
