Indie Royale Launch Bundle uses intriguing price model

27 October 2011

Ask any indie developer; making money from making games is tough, especially when you need money to make your games in the first place.

That’s why the payment scheme being used for the Indie Royale Site Launch is so intriguing – because it breaks the mould typically used by indie devs, where they have to under-sell their product to gain attention (but suffer a loss) or inflate their value to make a success out of fewer purchases.

The idea of the bundle is simple: 4 fantastic indie games (valued at around $40) are available for a super low starting price of $1.99.

As more people buy the bundle, the price goes up – offering “competitive” prices all the way.

This pricing scheme essentially rewards early adopters by giving them the best deal, and encourages some sort of indie-hype so that interested gamers hurry to get the best deal for themselves, which, in theory, boosts the profile of the games on offer.

There’s also an option to pay full-price and more (if you’re feeling particularly kind) which has the inverse effect on the price – causing it to become cheaper for everyone else.

Indie Royale will be refreshing their bundles with new games every two weeks.

For the launch of this Indie Royale initiative, the four games up for grabs are A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda, Gemini Rue, Sanctum and Nimbus.

The site also has a countdown clock, counting down (as they do) to the next bundle release.

It will be very interesting to see how this picks up, and what effect it will have on the indie scene.
