Aspiring megalomaniacs can now get their first look at Valve’s new puzzle creator for Portal 2.
While the Portal 2 Authoring Tools released earlier this year were popular, Valve say they got a lot of feedback saying they were too complicated to use, alienating gamers who weren’t architects or structural engineers.
The new tool set aims to be a simpler and streamlined, and for most, more fun. Valve’s philosophy behind the design is “powerful, but straightforward”.
It’s not just the creation of the puzzles that Valve hopes to streamline either, they’re making it a lot easier to both play others’ puzzles and share your own.
In their words, “[players will] be able to immediately upload those levels to their Steam Cloud and share them with other players online. We’re also building a community site to host all of these player-created puzzles. The site will allow players to quickly find new puzzles and add them to their game, ready to play, with a single click. Players will then be able to rate the puzzles they’ve played, leave comments for puzzle creators, and follow creators they like.”
To illustrate their straightforward approach, they’ve released screenshots of the editor in action, and one has to admit that it does look very sleek and non-threatening. Then again, so did GLaDOS. Check it out:
