A new trailer for the Darkness II has surfaced, showcasing exactly how gory the ultra-violent and sadistic sequel will actually be.
Taking place 2 years after the Darkness, Jackie (the protagonist from the first one) is Don of the Franchetti crime family; he still can’t get over what happened to Jenny, and The Darkness inside of him is being kept at bay – but wants out.
Cue drama.
Assassination attempts, almost dying and the mysterious appearance of an ancient order called “The Brotherhood” (aren’t they always) mean that The Darkness obviously gets re-awakened within Jackie – and bodies start piling up.
And from the looks of things, they’ll be piling up in pieces.

You can expect the gameplay in The Darkness II to be very similar to the previous game – only with greater emphasis being placed on how Jackie uses his Darkness powers – with the Darklings especially getting a more prominent role.
The “Quad-wield” system lets you use your Darkness-tendril-monster-head-thingies while also shooting stuff.
They also interact with the environment, letting you grab things to shield yourself – or chuck them at enemies – and will also play a big role in the gruesome finish moves you’ll see in the trailer.
On show is some delightful decapitation; a skull and spine rip that would do Sub-Zero proud; and the joyful visuals of a man being torn in half.
Oh. And let’s not forget one final glimpse of a gentleman having his love-plums tenderly extracted via tentacular means.

Even though the game looks more like the graphic novels now – thanks to the cell-shaded, painted look of the game – the feel is far from comic; with the same gory, broody and dark tone very much there.
If you name your game “The Darkness” – that’s pretty much a given, right?
This is shaping up to be a pretty gruesome trip into darkness – and we welcome it; let it enfold you next year in February 2012.
