DOOM 3 source code ready to go public

1 November 2011

If you’ve been waiting seven years to clone DOOM 3 and get rich, you’ll be thrilled to hear you won’t be waiting much longer – id Software is prepping to release the game’s source code to the general public.

“Doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release,” id’s John Carmack posted on Twitter last night.

It’s a bit of a tradition for the company to release source code for old engines when moving over to a new one, having released the source code for the original Doom engine back in 1997, spawning a generation of so-called “source ports” and modified versions of the game for multiple platforms, including Boom, Marine’s Best Friend, Doom Legacy, Skulltag, and Chocolate Doom.

DOOM 4 has reportedly been in development since 2008, although the recent and rather underwhelming launch of Rage prompted rumours and speculation that the project had been put on hold.

Bethesda later denied this, saying that “no title under development at id has been postponed – indefinitely or otherwise.”
