Sony loses almost $450 million in second quarter

2 November 2011

Sony Corp’s Consumer Products and Services division – which includes its PlayStation business – has reported a loss of $449 million during the June – September financial quarter, citing “unfavourable foreign exchange rates” and “lower LCD [TV] sales”.

The August PS3 price cut has probably also contributed to the loss, despite sales of 3.7 million consoles in the same period – an increase of 200 000 unit sales on last year, and the biggest second quarter for PS3 since launch.

As of 30 September, total worldwide sales for the PS3 are around 55.5 million, behind 57.6 million Xbox sales.

PS3 software sales are up from 35.3 million to 37.4 million, PSP software sales are down from 11 million to 8.1 million, PS2 software sales fell from 5.6 million to 2.8 million, and the planet’s population increased from 6.9 to 7 billion which is really quite a lot for a land surface area of just 148 940 000 km2.

Just sayin’.
