Stealth Bastard is free because “we just wanted to get it out there”

9 November 2011

If you’ve not yet checked out Curve Studios’ Stealth Bastard: Tactical Espionage Arsehole; WHY NOT? IT’S FREE.

Besides, it’s all the rage now – the action platformer, described as “Metal Gear Solid meets Super Meat Boy”, has already been downloaded over 15,000 times since last week, and a huge part of that is because, well, it’s completely free. So why’s that?

“We just wanted to get it out there, the biggest barrier to anybody experiencing anything is they have to pay for it,” producer Ed Fear told Develop.

“We also wanted to use it as an advert for Explodemon. In the game when you quit, there’s an advert for the fact that we have this other game out.”

“There was a point when we could have commercialised it, but we decided that building a community and engaging people was actually more valuable to us in the long run than a small amount of money now,” he explained, adding that the company has had “a lot” of people saying they’d have paid for it, and asking to donate money anyway. It’s just that good, apparently.
