Torchlight 2 delayed again

Torchlight was one of 2009’s stand-out sleeper hits. Developed by Runic Games, the game was released exclusively for PC, and served up a much needed dose of action-RPG goodness in a time where gamers around the world were chomping at the bit for something that resembled Diablo III.

Diablo III is still not out, and in the meantime Runic has been working on a Torchlight sequel, which promises to flesh out the original experience with additional multiplayer options and new features.

Sadly, a post on the official Torchlight website has revealed that the sequel will not meet its original planned 2011 release date, and will now be released sometime in 2012, adding to the litany of delays already experienced by the title.

Runic fully intended to get the game out in time for Christmas, but has now conceded that they’ve “come to the realization, however, that getting a game of this scope up to the quality and polish level we want to achieve is going to take a little longer; especially since we want to run a small beta before release to ensure that our launch is smooth.

The announcement makes a good point though: “Besides, you’re all playing Skyrim right now anyway, aren’t you? Or Battlefield 3? Or Uncharted 3? Or Saints Row 3? Or Arkham City? Or Skyward Sword? Or Minecraft? Or Modern Warfare 3? Or Dark Souls? Or Assassin’s Creed Revelations?”
