Guillermo Del Toro really hates cutscenes

Critically acclaimed movie direct Guillermo Del Toro has generated a lot of excitement since announcing the development of his survival horror game, Insane.

So what would you expect from the mind of the director that spawned such horrific, mind-bending fantasies such as Pan’s Labyrinth? A honed and crafted storyline, a chilling atmosphere, lengthy, superbly directed cutscenes?

While the story and the atmosphere should no doubt be a home run, don’t expect any long cutscenes. Why? Because “I’m not watching a movie, f***k you. I want a game.” These are the words spoken by Del Toro in an audio interview with Ken Levine (not THAT Ken Levine), in which he expresses, as a gamer, his hatred of cutscenes.

“I’m a gamer, my daughters are gamers, we spend countless hours in the game universe … You know what kind of gamer I am? When we come to a cinematic, I jump it. I go ‘I’m not watching a movie, f*** you’. I want a game. You can selectively take control away from the gamer for a few seconds but don’t render him inactive. Give him something to do, but don’t f****** say, ‘And now a word from our sponsor’.”

Whatever assumptions we may have about a movie director making a game can safely be tossed out the window then – Del Toro clearly has his own, unique vision. We’re yet to receive any kind of release date, but the general word is that it’s going to be a couple of years.
