DOOM 3 source code now available

23 November 2011

After being temporarily held up in some sort of legal to-do earlier this month, DOOM 3’s source code has been released to the public.

It’s never been a better time to make that game you’ve always said you were going to do. Or at least a tech demo. Or maybe just a textured cube.

The code comes with a pretty heavy user agreement, including this bit in all caps:

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.

Presumably that includes inadvertently opening a gateway to the fiery abyss and unleashing seven shades of infernal vengeance upon the world, so mind you don’t press the wrong buttons.

You can download the source code over at GitHub, but note that it doesn’t actually include any game data so you’re on your own there. I’d suggest starting with duct tape.
