BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing technology that lets users upload and download files to one another over the Internet.
For the uninitiated the technology can be tricky to use, with torrent files, swarms, seeds, peers, trackers, caches, indices, and even confusing acronyms like DHT.
The first step to downloading a file using BitTorrent is to get a torrent file (which points to at least one tracker) from an index.
Three torrent index sites, TorLock, Torrentfunk, and YourBittorrent share with MyBroadband their lists of the 15 most downloaded torrents by South African visitors.
Such lists of the most popular torrents in the world over a period are common, but statistics specific to South Africa are hard to come by.
TorLock boasts that it is the biggest source of verified torrents on the Internet with over 500,000 torrent files in its database. It also offers to pay users $1 for every fake they can find. According to TorLock’s Google Analytics stats, 17,808 South Africans visited the site in October 2011.
Torrentfunk focuses on the latest torrent releases on the web, claiming to host “over 3 million of the latest and best Torrents on the web.” According to its administrators the site has over 100 uploaders and promises users the latest releases as soon as they come out. Torrentfunk saw 15,254 South African visitors in October according to its Google Analytics stats.
YourBittorrent recently decided to share their stats and have consistently reported the highest number of South African visitors of the three sites. October was no different with YourBittorrent’s stats showing 25,111 visitors from SA. YourBittorrent’s claim to fame is that they allow charities to advertise on the site for free.
