In case you’re not tired of this debate yet, Valve’s Gabe Newell is adding his views to the debacle of the week: piracy!
During an interview with The Cambridge Student Online, Valve’s big boss said that piracy is about service, not pricing.
“If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer – and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store – then the pirate’s service is more valuable,” he told TCS.
“Most DRM solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly restricting a customer’s use or by creating uncertainty.”
While not directly responding to the whole fiasco, Gabe’s comments at least reflect a more grounded attitude towards piracy on the PC platform – calling it a non-issue for the company.
“Our goal is to create greater service value than pirates, and this has been successful enough for us that piracy is basically a non-issue for our company”
So there you have it folks, almost every angle covered – next week, expect a focus on animal rights, with a PETA article coming at you each day*.
*No. Definitely not.
