Kinect 2 added to next-gen talk

28 November 2011

Another week, another mention of the future tech that lies ahead of us.

According to a Eurogamer report, they’ve heard murmurings from within that industry about the next version of Microsoft’s Kinect, which is apparently set to be built into future Xbox consoles.

The now-dubbed Kinect 2 will be able to track your voice pitch, and analyze your facial expressions to such a point that it could tell you how you feel. Is anyone else getting creeped out by this yet?

“Hello Quinton, my objective analysis of your facial expressions indicates you’re depressed today. It has been 8.32 days since you last smiled.” Then the Microsoft paperclip will appear recommending methods of suicide.

If you’re interested in the tech behind the Kinect, and why Kinect 2 would be so much more advanced, the report also covers that.

The Kinect of today works via USB, and because the Xbox can have a bunch of USB things working with it at once, the Kinect is artificially limited to a 320 x 240 resolution. By having the Kinect 2 built into the system, that limit disappears as the sensor can feed directly into the device.

Hi-definition sensor, means greater detail, and one step closer to the machines taking over.

As expected, Microsoft told Eurogamer that it “does not comment on rumour or speculation” – which is another way of saying “EVERYTHING IS TRUE”. At least, in internet terms.
