It’s had a good run, but sci-fi MMO Star Wars Galaxies will be shutting down their servers on 15 December at 9PM PST, according to the game’s official forum, after eight years of life.

The closing of the servers will be preceded by the end of the Galactic Civil War 24 hours beforehand, with various battles and in-game events occurring on the morning of 15 December.

Over the last eight years the MMO has enjoyed three expansions, a trading card game and a novel.

While not explicitly stated, the closure is no doubt in large part to the release of Bioware and EA’s highly-anticipated Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, which casts a very large shadow on the long-in-the-tooth Galaxies.

Recently Activision bogeyman Bobby Kotick claimed that The Old Republic won’t be able to be economically successful due to the heavy licensing fees which must be paid to George Lucas for using the Star Wars franchise. Galaxies eight-year run however makes that claim a little less credible.
