EA clarifies Online Pass expiry drama

5 December 2011

Over the weekend, a forum user on NeoGAF discovered that the Online Pass codes in his new copy of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit had expired, prompting a predictably indignant discussion among other users about how codes are only valid for a certain amount of time, it’s-right-there-in-the-EULA, “you are screwed”, and RANT RANT RANT EVIL CORPORATE EMPIRE RANT RANT RANT.

Fortunately, the responsible people over at Joystiq actually bothered contacting EA to find out what the deal actually is. As it turns out, online pass codes can expire, but access to the relevant content does not. All you have to do is get a new code from EA, and it’s free.

So that’s that.

It does seem a bit strange, though. I mean, if they just renew the code or give you a new one, why have the codes expire in the first place? Sounds like a whole lot of tedious admin for nothing, but I suppose that’s about 99% of big business.
