Nintendo’s legendary Miyamoto is NOT retiring

Earlier today, Wired reported that Nintendo legend and Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, had announced his retirement – stepping down to rather work on smaller games.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,’” Miyamoto told Wired, “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”

This news rippled through gaming sites, which proceeded to flog headlines like THE WORLD OF GAMING IS COMING TO AN END!*  GAMES NO LONGER RELEVANT!* WHY GOD WHY I DON’T WANT TO LIVE ANYMORE!*

We at MyGaming are slightly more prudent however (and belly-button lint is really tough to get out) so we held back on our coverage – just as well, because Nintendo have come out, guns-blazing, refuting the reports.

Something about their shares tanking 2% might have had something to do with that.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Nintendo had this to say:

“This is not true, he will not be stepping down. Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo is not changing. He will continue to be a driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts.”

“In discussing his priorities at Nintendo in a media interview, Mr. Miyamoto explained how he is encouraging the younger developers at the company to take more initiative and responsibility for developing software.”

So there you have it; it was all just one big misunderstanding, and we can all sleep better tonight, cuddling our GameBoys and handling our Wiis.

* These are untrue
