Cross-platform games network, Raptr, has revealed the most popular games of 2011, according to its extensive database of over 10 million gamers.
Statistics were determined based on total hours played in the first month; average session length in the first month; and average playtime per person in the first week. Due to data restrictions, this report does not factor in playtime data from Wii and PS3.
Most played game of 2011: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Most Played Shooter: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)
Most Played RPG: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Most Played Open-World Game – Batman: Arkham City
Most Played Sports Game – FIFA Soccer 12
Most Played Social Game – The Sims Social
Most Played New IP – L.A. Noire
Most Successful Paid to Free-to-Play Game – DC Universe Online
No huge surprises here – although just how Skyrim was awarded the Most Played Game award, yet it was beaten by Batman: Arkham City for Most Played Open-World Game, is a little puzzling.
According to Raptr, Modern Warfare 3 racked up double the amount of playtime as Battlefield 3 in its first month – although the former did outsell EA’s shooter by a significant margin. Also, the results exclude PS3 playtime, and the Call of Duty brand is particularly strong on Xbox 360.
Skyrim was by far the most played RPG of the year, racking up six times as much game time in the first month as its closest competitor, Dragon Age 2.
“2011 is turning out to be a boon for gamers, and our awards highlight how gamers are investing the most amount of their precious time playing every day,” said Dennis Fong, CEO of Raptr. “We want to congratulate all the people involved in creating the hit games that won in their respective categories.”

Indeed, that also left me scratching my head a bit.
