The world is anxiously awaiting the game reveals at the 2011 Spike VGA Awards, but luckily for the more impatient among us, we can eat our dessert before dinner.
A new gameplay video for Metal Gear Rising has hit the interwebs early, showcasing some impressive cutscenes as well as gameplay footage, and it shows a very, very different Metal Gear game from anything we’ve seen before.
The first thing to go is the name – it is now known as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, a clever combination of revenge and vengeance. In addition, Bayonetta developer Platinum Games has taken over the development.
The gameplay is in stark contrast to previous Metal Gear games, with stealth seemingly abandoned in favour of elaborate, over-the-top sword fights against groups of cyborgs, with various cutscenes mixed into the action. The video also features a giant boss-like creature wielding an enormous sword that looks capable of cutting down apartment complexes.
More information will be revealed at the VGAs by producer of the game, Kojima Productions, the developer headed up by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.
For now however this new video is certainly going to polarise the community, as while many may find the fresh take exciting and interesting, a number may despise the lack of anything one would expect to see in a Metal Gear game.
The whole thing has taken on a distinctly more Japanese flavour, with elaborate fight and death sequences, blond-haired wide-eyed protagonists, multiple action cut-scenes and a ridiculous name to boot. We’ll have to wait and see how this all shakes out, but for now, enjoy (or hate) the video:
