Modern Warfare 3 earns 1 billion dollars in 16 days

13 December 2011

Modern Warfare 3 has beaten out James Cameron’s Avatar to set a new record for the race to 1 billion dollars in the shortest time.

2009’s 3D epic from the Titanic director took 17 days to hit the 1 billion dollar mark – but according to Activision, Modern Warfare 3 has reached the same target, one day faster.

NPD reported last month that Modern Warfare 3 had sold 8,9 million copies, making it the biggest launch this year – breaking the record set by Black Ops the year before.

I guess it goes without saying – love it or hate it, Call of Duty and Modern Warfare is absolutely massive; not even mass Metascore bashing by the gaming public can bring it down.

Millions upon millions of sales, about a million users signing up for Elite – I think it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing CoD games until we die.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick had this to say about the milestone:

“Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences.”

Cha-ching!
