Naughty Dog: The Last of Us is “not a zombie game”

If you thought Naughty Dog‘s new PS3 exclusive, The Last of Us, was just another zombie game with zombies, you’re wrong. So wrong.

In fact, it’s the game that going to “change the f***ing industry” with its awesome story-telling, gameplay, music, and art direction (and zombies). That’s the big plan, anyway

“It’s not a zombie game,” game director Bruce Straley told Eurogamer in a previous interview following the game’s official reveal at the Spike TV VGAs over the weekend.

“If the game was about the monsters, we would have not showed them,” added creative director, Neil Druckmann. “The story’s not about them, so [we thought] let’s get it out of the way.”

Instead, the game focuses on the “father-daughter-like” relationship between the protagonists, Joel and a teen named Ellie.

“It’s story-driven, [but] the whole triangle is story, gameplay and art,” explained Straley. “As a gamer it’s all about strategy and giving the player enough tools in their toolkit so that they can come upon something and choose and have the consequences play out within their choices.”

“That’s what Naughty Dog can bring to the genre and really own it: every decision we make is about the characters and their relationship. We approached this genre because we felt no-one is getting to the heart of it. [The Last of Us] tells you something about the human condition – that’s what you want to do as a storyteller,” said Druckmann.

“This is going to sound corny and it might not appeal to gamers, but I would say it’s a love story. It’s not a romantic love story, it’s a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship.”

The game’s already been in development for two years, although no release date has yet been confirmed.
