The Xbox 360’s hot new Metro look, and cloud saves, and gratuitous number of ads have come at a great and terrible cost, apparently – turns out the console’s video playback is a bit stuffed now.
According to a report compiled by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry wizards, the new dashboard is running video playback at “limited range RGB levels”, meaning that the colour is bland and desaturated. The problem affects playback on both HDMI and component output. The article’s side-by-side screenshots show a significant difference in colour levels between the previous NXE dashboard and the new one.
More ominously, the issue was allegedly present during the dashboard’s public beta, with Microsoft’s only response being routine deletion of threads about the problem, with the following message:
“Thanks for the feedback! Though we will not be able to incorporate your feedback into this release we will save it for consideration in future releases. Thanks for using the new Xbox Update and please keep up the feedback!”
I’m sure this is going to go together awesomely with all those new live TV and video streaming apps also added in the update.
