IndieDB and parent site ModDB began their annual round of voting in December, looking for the best of indie games and game mods of 2011. Gamers and developers alike voted on their favourite indie games and mods. 170,000 votes were cast.

Scott Reismanis, the founder of ModDB and IndieDB, commented “For the first time in a long time, it was hard to argue with the 2011 winners, with even the staunchest critics agreeing every game featured deserved its place.”
