Epic not supporting the “current version” of SOPA

5 January 2012

Epic has joined EA, Sony, Nintendo, Google, and a bunch of other companies in opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act, a predictably controversial bill that would authorise the US Department of Justice to prosecute websites for facilitating or enabling copyright infringement in America and abroad.

“Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that’s compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law,” declared Dana Cowley, Epic’s PR person.

“Thus, we do not support the current version of SOPA.”

Which is not to say they wouldn’t support some future version of SOPA, of course, but let’s live in the moment.

Hilariously, a recent report from TorrentFreak linked more than 800 IPs from the US House of Representatives (where the bill is being drafted) to content on BitTorrent, including illegal downloads of movies, porn, and a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. Hypocrisy is a thing.

Earlier this week, Anonymous declared war on Sony for supporting SOPA, because cyberterrorism is really mature.
