New Devil May Cry “squarely competing” with Bayonetta

5 January 2012

Be honest – when you saw the DmC reboot trailer for the first time, you couldn’t help but run comparisons between it and other popular, over-the-top-kill-everything-that-moves action title, Bayonetta.

But don’t feel bad (as if you did) – because by their own admission, Ninja Theory are “squarely competing” with Bayonetta developers, Platinum Games, in key areas of their game.

More specifically, when it comes down to flow and combat.

“You always want to go out there and beat your competitor to some degree,” said DmC producer Alex Jones, to Inside Xbox, “There are places where we’re squarely competing with Bayonetta, and that’s at the ‘how does the game feel when it’s in your hand?’ [level]. We absolutely want the same fluidity of control that’s a standard setting at that level for them.”

Games like DmC and Bayonetta will always be compared,  regardless of the criteria the developers ‘choose’ to compete on – so luckily Jones had a lot to say about what sets them apart from the witch with magical hair.

“The other areas, tone, storytelling, we’re offering a different experience from Bayonetta and we feel really good about that experience. Some areas we’re competing with them. Some areas we’re offering something different.”

Creative director, Tameem Antoniades, went on to highlight how the world, and how it comes alive and tries to attack you is one of the biggest lines drawn to set the new DmC apart from the competition, saying these events are elements that “haven’t existed in the DMC series before.”
