Diablo III launch dates; Blizzard denies everything

There was a bit of a pandemonium over the weekend, after Joystiq caught a Twitter photo of to an in-store Best Buy display in Minnesota, advertising a 1 February launch date for Diablo III, with a midnight release and an electronic countdown and everything.

Responding on Twitter shortly thereafter, however, Blizzard community manager Micah “Bashiok” Whipple denied everything in a series of Tweets, saying “The word is lol”, “We can’t really keep every individual retail shop from making up a date”, perhaps most definitively, “Diablo III does not have a release date. Any store or person claiming otherwise is guessing”, and finally that “They misspelled February. I’m not sure it was all that official to begin with.”

According to an update back on Joystiq, a shop manager said he’d been told to remove the sign by his boss because the manufacturer had not been “very firm” about the game’s release date, confirming also that the sign had not been shipped from Blizzard.

So that’s that… but maybe not. Now UK retailer Gameplay is showing a 3 February launch date for the game, while the French version of Euro retailer EB Games is showing it at 1 February.

So yeah, I think it’s well time Blizzard just announced a proper launch date and put all this rumour and speculation to an end.

I’ve already started foaming at the mouth.

    Do badly want!

Just went down to my local game store to lay down a deposit for the collectors edition (first collectors edition I was willing to fork out for) and the email said 25th of March. Mentioned this article to the guy behind the counter and he laughed. He mentioned that they were now told to expect it in April. “We’ll expect it when it launches.” was the last thing he told me šŸ˜‰

    Goodbye friends and family!
