Users with SIM cards provisioned to work exclusively on the 8ta network have reported seeing a new 60GB+60GB promotional package for R1,800 in the *180# pre-paid data bundle USSD menu.

Based on the structure of its previous promotions, this suggests that users will get 60GB of data to use any time and 60GB “midnight surfer” cap to use between 00:00 and 05:00.

Taking only the “anytime” data into account, this comes to a per-gigabyte price of R30/GB. At this price point, 8ta is competing well with ADSL products, let alone other mobile networks.

Promotions similar to this one also typically only work on the 8ta network and can’t make use of the roaming agreement the operator has with MTN.

What isn’t clear at this stage is whether this promotion will be subject to 8ta’s normal prepaid data bundle validity period. Data bundles are valid for a maximum of 60 days, expiring at the end of the month following the month in which it was purchased.

8ta has refused to answer questions about the promotion, saying that they will issue a press release about the promotion at 12:00 today (11 January 2012).
