Microsoft finally admits Xbox video playback is borked, “update soon”

20 January 2012

After the New! Improved! Now with more green! Xbox dashboard update dropped last month, reports started circulating around the interwebs about problems with the video playback.

More specifically, according to an investigation by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry tech sorcerors, the video playback was running with “limited range RGB levels”, rendering the colour flat and desaturated.

The issue was apparently also present during the dashboard beta in the month preceding its launch, raising questions of why it wasn’t fixed before launch.

Microsoft’s response at the time was a sort of “SHH, SHHHHH, DON’T TELL”, accompanied by widespread deletion of complaints on their forums.

Now Xbox LIVE boss Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb has finally acknowledged the issue, saying on Twitter that “We’re aware of the colorspace issue w/ some Xbox video apps & are working on a fix. No ETA yet but we hope to have an update soon.”

So they know about it, and they’re fixing it, and that’s good news.
