Ubisoft confirms Anno 2070 DRM is awful by design

20 January 2012

Following a mini-controversy earlier this week about Anno 2070’s seemingly ridiculous DRM policy, Ubisoft has confirmed that, yes, you use up one of three activations per hardware swap, and that once again, describing a DRM policy as “seemingly ridiculous” is redundant.

Responding to a query from Rock Paper Shotgun about the policy , Ubisoft said:

“While it’s correct that copies of Anno include three activations and that changing hardware may trigger the need for reactivation, the vast majority of Anno customers never encounter this scenario. On the rare occasion when a customer does need additional activations, Ubisoft customer service is available to quickly resolve the situation, and we encourage those customers to contact us directly so that we can ensure they are able to continue to enjoy their game.”

I think the best part is where people who paid for a game have to put up with all these restrictions, while people who downloaded cracked copies of the game don’t.

I like how they say the vast majority of customers won’t run into the problem, because obviously nobody upgrades their machines these days :/
