DoGaming has revealed the numbers of currently registered players for its 2012 league season. Registrations close at the end of January 2012, thereafter the various league matches will kick off.

Modern Warfare 3 is this year’s most popular game in the DGL, with a total of 47 teams having signed up.

The number of Call of Duty 4 teams has slumped to 24 in 2012, which is an interesting development considering CoD 4 has for many years been the most popular game in the DGL.

No cash prizes have been confirmed for the Call of Duty 4 league, while a total of R60,000 is already up for grabs for Modern Warfare 3 players, courtesy of Megarom and Monster Energy. “However, this doesn’t mean there will be no cash prizes for Call of Duty 4 or any of the other titles where nothing has been confirmed on prizes yet. All it means is that prizes for those titles have not yet been confirmed – not that there will be no prizes,” said DoGaming’s Ryan Peter.

Battlefield 3 is looking fairly strong so far, with 25 teams signed up. Courtesy of EA and Gaming Inc. (Incredible Connection’s gaming arm) there will be a R100,000 cash prize purse up for grabs, making it the most significant prize pool in the DGL 2012 so far.

StarCraft II has enjoyed an impressive 124 player registrations.

FIFA 12 has 24 Xbox 360 players and 59 PS3 players signed up.

Gran Turismo 5 is also looking strong with 52 players, while Forza 4 has 32 confirmed participants.

“It’s great to see the console leagues are getting a good response,” said Ryan Peter.

Gears of War 3 has just one team signed up; meaning the outlook for the competitive future of the game in SA is rather ominous.
