Guild Wars 2 for console in the works

16 February 2012

In a surprising twist, NCsoft has confirmed that it plans to release a console version of its massively anticipated free-to-play fantasy MMORPG sequel, Guild Wars 2. While the developer has in the past hinted that it would like to see Guild Wars 2 on console, this is the first time it has formally stated a clear intent to make it happen.

The announcement was made during a conference call:

“[Console] When it comes to Guild Wars 2 as we have announced already, we are in the preparation stage. For other titles we are looking at various options as we speak. So once again, nothing has been finalized yet for me to make specific comments now.”

In a follow up comment, publisher ArenaNet’s Martin Kerstein had this to say to Guildware2guru.com:

“I think “stay calm, don’t panic” will become my new mantra.”

“We stated multiple times in public that we have a small team working on a console version, but that we are fully dedicated to make the most kickass game for PC (I think the official statement did not use the word kickass, in case someone wants to semantically disect my post  ).”

NCSoft also confirmed plans to launch large scale testing for Guild Wars 2 in March and April. The outcome of this testing phase will largely determine the game’s final release schedule, although “seasonality” factors will also be taken into consideration for the purposes of planning a release date. It is a well documented fact that MMO servers tend to be busier over the Northern hemisphere’s Winter months, which makes a late 2012 release relatively likely.

No more details have been provided regarding the planned console release, although both publisher and developer seem adamant right now that the PC version is the primary focus at this point.
