Medal of Honor: Warfighter details surface

The first details about EA’s just announced Medal of Honor sequel have been revealed via CVG.

In case you missed it, the sequel to the 2010 franchise reboot was announced late last week. Here is what we already knew:

  • The game is being published by EA and developed by the same studio that bought us 2010’s Medal of Honor reboot, Danger Close Studios.
  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter will be released in October 2012.
  • It will take place in Afghanistan, and follow the story of Western Tier 1 operatives.
  • Unlike its predecessor, Medal of Honor: Warfighter will be developed solely by Danger Close. Danger Close developed Medal of Honor’s single player campaign, while DICE was pulled in to work on the multiplayer.
  • It will run on EA’s Frostbite 2.0 engine, which is the same technology that powers Battlefield 3.

Now that you’re up to speed, here is what we’ve just learned from an interview with the game’s producer, Greg Goodrich.

  • The game will feature a new one-shot-kill hardcore mode.
  • It will introduce a new kind of co-operative play, although no more details were shared on this.
  • Danger Close used real stories shared by marines in Afghanistan to develop the game’s storylines.
  • Although the game will closely follow the recent conflict in the Middle East, we should not expect it to recreate the Osama Bin Laden assassination. “That’s not our story to tell,” said Goodrich.
  • The following characters will return from the previous game: Preacher, Voodoo, Mother, as well as others.
  • The flooded Isabela City in the Philippines is one of the game’s confirmed locations.

A full reveal is expected at next week’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco.

The broader consensus regarding 2010’s Medal of Honor reboot was that it was a huge disappointment. Having said that, the game did have its fans – myself included.

The single player campaign was generally quite positively received, so it will be interesting to see what Danger Close comes up with in the sequel.
