Fez creator: modern Japanese games “just suck”

7 March 2012

Fez creator, Phil Fish, has declared war on weeaboos after saying, during a Q&A panel at GDC, that modern Japanese games “just suck”.

During the talk, an unidentified Japanese dev reportedly asked the panel – which also included Braid creator, Jonathan Blow – what they thought of modern Japanese games, with reference to so many developers having been inspired as children by games like Zelda and Super Mario Bros.

“Your games just suck,” said Fish, before reportedly making a series of disparaging comments about Japanese game design. Blow apparently joined in, saying he “totally agreed” and describing Japanese games as “joyless husks”.

Fish later followed up on Twitter, saying “I’m sorry Japanese guy! I was a bit rough, but your country’s games are f*** terrible nowadays,” and “Well, you know, not ALL of them. Just… a lot of them,” and finally “I stand by what I said. Most modern Japanese games are terrible. You can quote me on that.”

I think Fish and I would totally get on.
