Valve denies Steam Box rumours

9 March 2012

The Steam Box thing? It’s totally not happening –  surprise!

While Valve won’t rule out the possibility of doing a console at some point in the future, it’s not something they’re doing right now.

“We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on,” Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi told Kotaku. “We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount.”

“All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”

Asked to clarify that “there’s definitely nothing coming any time soon, nothing at GDC or E3, but what you’re not ruling out is the possibility that, hey, maybe some day Valve would make hardware”, Lombardi confirmed this was “accurate”. So no ambiguity here, conspiracy fans.

This is the part when Valve announces a new console at GDC, and Gabe Newell moons the audience, squealing “FOOOOOLED YOU”. But probably not.

Pity, would’ve been keen to see something like this from Valve. Would’ve definitely shaken things up.

I mean, a mini PC with the intent of being a console as opposed to a console trying to be a PC trying to be a console? Rocking socks, most definitely.
