Bethesda successfully trademarks a common noun

13 March 2012

After kissing and making up with Bethesda parent company Zenimax over the “Scrolls” trademark last week, Mojang is now apparently prohibited from using the word in any future releases.

You know, because it’s obviously very easy to confuse a game called Scrolls, with Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series – like I’ve always mixed up Total War and World of WarCraft or any game with the word “the” in the title. It’s so hard to tell them apart.

Mojang had originally tried to secure rights to the name for any sequels in the series, but that was a no go.

According to the settlement terms, Mojang is allowed to release its Scrolls game, currently in development, without paying any damages to Zenimax – but any sequels will have to have some new name. I think they should call it Curly Paper Manuscript Thingies.
