Okay, I have a dirty secret. Ready for it? I never played The Last Express.
I mean, I have a good excuse (Diablo), but for somebody who loves old school adventure games, not having played this one is kind of shameful. I’m at least partly responsible for its commercial failure, and for that, I should surely be damned to an eternity playing only Zynga titles.
Well, I might have been, but apparently I’ve been given some chance of redemption – the game has just been announced for an iOS re-release.
“I’ve been biting my virtual tongue for the past few months in my eagerness to respond to the many fans of The Last Express who’ve suggested how beautifully this 1997 adventure game could work as an iPad/iPhone app,” writes Last Express creator and game dev legend Jordan Mechner over on his blog.
“It’s with enormous pleasure that I can finally share this good news: A young French company, DotEmu (who celebrated their fifth anniversary in Paris last night — making them ten years younger than the game) is developing a full iOS version of Last Express, to be released later this year.”
Promising more “details to follow”, Mechner adds that the game will be pretty much exactly the same game originally released in 1997, plus “a few additional enhancements to make it more iOS-friendly”.
The game is set aboard the Orient Express just before World War I, and plays out in a simulation of real-time (but sped up by a factor of six), starting at 7:14PM on July 24, 1914, and ending at 7:30PM on July 27.
