MWEB Clan Connection MW3 Championship is SA’s biggest PS3 tournament ever

20 March 2012

In South Africa, the competitive gaming scene is generally dominated by PC gamers, with the likes of Battlefield 3, Call of Duty 4, CoD: Black Ops, StarCraft II, HoN and others being well supported.

However, local console gamers typically avoid getting too serious when it comes to online gaming.

MWEB Clan Connection’s MW3 PS3 tournament, which kicked off over the weekend, bucked that trend, with 32 teams signing up in around 6 hours. That’s double the amount of teams that signed up for the Xbox 360 version of the tournament.

The event was so well received that Kalahari.com doubled the prize purse to R10,500 in Kalahari vouchers.

The weekend saw the first 3 rounds play out, consisting of Search and Destroy, Capture the Flag, and Domination.

The tournaments follows the MLG based rule set. According to MWEB, the event was well organized and smoothly run from the MWEB MCave.

Teams showed up on time and the first round narrowed the participants down by half. According to MWEB, the Capture the Flag round was a “messy affair, with sharp tactics narrowing down the teams even further.”

The 8 teams currently remaining in the tournament are F34R Elite, D3ATH Ang3ls, DICE1, D2U, xR8D, Lost Elite, F34R Delta, and F34R F34R.

These teams will battle it out this week in Domination to reach the semi finals.
