So, good news and… weird news.
The good news is, in a first ever in the whole universe and history of time, a petition might actually have helped bring attention to a particular cause. In this case, the Retake Mass Effect petition has declared “HUGE SUCCESS” following BioWare’s open letter to fans yesterday, promising them new “game content initiatives” to make nice again.
That’s assuming someone at BioWare actually saw the petition, so let’s assume that.
“I don’t believe anyone can or should consider this effort to have been anything but spectacularly successful. As evidenced by the statement from Dr. Myzuka yesterday, we have made our voices heard. Those of you here have taken special care to be heard in a polite, positive manner, and I believe that this is a major contributor to that success,” writes petition organiser Robb “Robb” Robb on the group’s ChipIn page.
Which brings us around to the weird news. Until now, the petition has also been raising money for the Child’s Play charity, but they’ve been asked to stop that. By Child’s Play. Huh?
“I have been in contact with a manager at Child’s Play,” explained Robb. “First, he wanted to stress how grateful they were for our efforts here, and the huge impact it will have in helping the charity. However, he pointed out that several sources are incorrectly assuming a link between the charity and the petition, or outright support of the petition by the charity. This has been the source of some difficulty for them, and it has been requested that we wind this effort down. Again, I want to stress that the charity is not unhappy with our work, they are exceptionally pleased with what we have accomplished.”
… But Child’s Play’s manager liked the way the game ended, so that’s enough of that. Or something like that.
Robb has set the charity drive’s end goal at $80,000, at which point it will be closed up. They’re currently at just over $64,000 so still a way to go.
