Starbreeze’s Cold Mercury will be free to play

27 March 2012

Starbreeze‘s next project is Cold Mercury – it’s the game everybody’s heard about, but nobody actually really knows anything much about. We do know it’s called Cold Mercury, that it’s a game, and – THIS JUST IN! – it’s going to be free to play.

The Syndicate and Chronicles of Riddick developer isn’t done with big budgets and big explosions just yet, though, despite this adventure in freemiumlands.

“Starbreeze will not leave the AAA segment,” Starbreeze boss, Mikael Nermark told GamesIndustry. “We are discussing with several leading game publisher on publisher financed games, but we will broaden our product portfolio of games in the new business models and segments that have arisen in the games industry.

“I am convinced that Starbreeze will be successful with the new games.”

Until more information is confirmed, let’s just assume Cold Mercury is a class-based multiplayer FPS, supported by microtransactions. That way, nobody’s disappointed when Starbreeze announces that Cold Mercury is a class-based multiplayer FPS, supported by microtransactions.
