DICE blames consoles for Battlefield 3 PC update delays

28 March 2012

PC gamers complaining about a lack of Battlefield 3 updates got something new to complain about today, with developer DICE blaming consoles for holding everything up. “Frustrating console certification,” is the culprit.

While developer DICE has completed work on the latest update, gamers have to wait while it is passed through a rigid certification process for PSN and Xbox Live.

“It’s very frustrating when it comes to – you have the fix, it’s done but you can’t roll it out,” executive producer Patrick Bachman told PC Gamer. “It’s not unique to us – everyone lives in this reality.”

It’s not all bad news, though.

“You get proper testing. There’s a lot of process that is there to guarantee a great gameplay experience. Our problem with support is we have a very big and complex game, so if something needs to be fixed, we need to be sure that it doesn’t break something at the other end and again, like I said, we don’t want to do emergency fixes to compensate for a problem in a specific area,” said Bachman.

EA and DICE have announced they will release the patches individually, and that the PC and PS3 patches will roll out tomorrow, 29 March.

There is still no word on when the Xbox 360 version of the patch will be ready and EA is sticking to a vague “it’s coming soon”.

The patch was announced last week, and it will include a wide range of gameplay changes. In particular, the PC version is getting some special attention, and we can expect improved server stability. Support for private servers is also on the cards.
