Warhammer 40K Dark Millennium Online goes single player

30 March 2012

THQ has announced that its planned Warhammer MMO, Warhammer 40K Dark Millenium Online, will no longer be released as an MMO. Instead, the game will be “an immersive single player and online multiplayer experience with robust digital content, and engaging community features.” The game is now simply called Warhammer 40K: Dark Millenium.

The decision seems to been made as result of THQ facing financial difficulties, and being forced to lay off 118 full-time staff. Of those staff, 79 were working on the MMO.

THQ was previously looking for a partner to help fund the game, telling Giant Bomb that “Dark Millennium Online is a game where THQ has to be ‘realistic about [their] resources’ and is seeking a partner to work on the game with.”

It would seem that the publisher never found a funding partner.

CEO Brian Farrell said: “Based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay.”
