Prime World MOBA offers discounts, bonuses to female players

3 April 2012

Russian developer Nival is attempting to attract more women to the (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) MOBA genre with their upcoming game, Prime World. Not by vetting the male gamers for creepers, mind you, but by offering in-game discounts on virtual characters to female gamers, and bonuses to teams comprising players of both genders.

“The idea is to introduce the MOBA genre not only to hardcore players who already love it, but to their friends who might be more casual, and of course to their sisters and girlfriends who may not be as hardcore,” game producer Larisa Nuretdinova told Penny Arcade.

“When boys gather around to play games just with each other, it’s not really social. When girls gather around just to chat, it’s not very social. The social starts when they hang out together and play games together.”

Yeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, I’m not convinced that the best way to promote inclusiveness is by discriminating. Here’s a thought – maybe Nival should just focus on making a game that, you know, people want to play, and stop worrying about whether they have hoo-hoos or spritzers.
