BioWare discusses “Dragon Age 3”

BioWare pulled off a bit of sorcery at PAX East recently, in which they managed to discuss plans for a game that doesn’t exist. Well, at least that’s what they want you to think.

Dragon Age lead designer Mike Laidlaw took some time to discuss the three biggest problems fans had with previous Dragon Age games. These were: “Stop reusing levels. Decisions that matter. Equipment for followers.”

In Laidlaw’s words, “Boy, those three came up. Those three came up quite a bit.”

One thing is certain – Dragon Age 3 won’t be taking place in Kirkwall, which just isn’t French (?) enough.

“We’re looking for variety, we’re looking for space, we’re looking for scope, we’re looking for something cool, forgotten, hidden and lost,” said Laidlaw. “If we really need to go somewhere urban, let’s make sure it’s not Kirkwall. Maybe let’s go somewhere new, somewhere a little more … French.”

There wasn’t much mentioned in the way of story, but interestingly Laidlaw did say that decisions players made in previous Dragon Age games could impact the new game. As for followers, Laidlaw did share some of BioWare’s ideas on customizing them. According to him, the main challenge they face is allowing for customizable armour without altering unique identities.

With a bit of concept art to demonstrate, Laidlaw showed how they currently plan on doing it. A chestplate was moved between two different characters, and the design of the plate would adapt to each of them, allowing the characters to keep their own style. Laidlaw emphasized the importance of maintaining this visual identity, which he says helps players pick out specific heroes on the battlefield. BioWare is also “looking at” customization of party member clothing as well.

Not a bad job for someone who didn’t use the words “sequel” or “3” once.
