Hate Games for Windows Live? Well that’s too bad.

18 April 2012

If you thought the release of Windows 8 – with its built-in support for Xbox LIVE – would see Microsoft binning the Games for Windows Live service forever, better think again.

Asked by NeoGamr if they’d be discontinuing the GFWL label with the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft said, simply, that “answer is no.”

If it’s any consolation, though, they’re also “making new investments in Metro style games”, including “core PC gamer” stuff like Age of Empires Online and Microsoft Flight. Ask your mom to embroider that on a pillow so you can sob into it at night.

The reviled GFWL was in the news again recently after Namco Bandai announced that their Dark Souls PC port would use it, prompting a petition that’s been signed by more than 20,000 people already.

Complaints cited include that the service is “difficult to use”, “inconvenient”, “very annoying”, has “unreliable online support”, and (hilariously) “is easily cracked by pirates”.
