The Sega Mega drive essentially represents everything that is good about gaming. We would do well to remember that games are meant first and foremost to be fun, which is exactly what they were during Sega’s Megadrive era.
If you are left questioning the purpose of re-releasing a piece of obsolete technology, or you don’t quite see the point in revisiting such a crude gaming platform, then the re-released Megadrive is not aimed at you. If however, the idea of reliving your early childhood on this old school monument to gaming is enough to getyou trembling with anticipation, then read on.
Interestingly, the new Megadrive is not being released by Sega, but is rather the product of a company called Blaze Entertainment and is not their first foray into retro game resurrection, with the company having previously released a handheld version of the Megadrive. This “new” Megadrive however, will function exactly as the original did, by plugging into a TV.
The new console will not be region locked, meaning that one can play any Megadrive title on it, regardless of its place of origin. It is also smaller and lighter than the original, and we should hope so considering how much power can be crammed into a device as compact as Sony’s PSP.
The device will come standard with two controller pads and 15 games built into its onboard memory, including Golden Axe and Sonic and Knuckles. The machine will be released internationally on April 25 and is expected to retail for €41 (R530).
No confirmation has been made regarding a local release.
