Dead Space dev calls Gears of War “atrocious”, then apologises for it

On Friday last week, Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver published a blog post slagging off Gears of War’s storytelling for its “atrocious, offensive violations of story basics” and “literally the worst writing in games.”

Predictably, those pull-quotes were quickly copy-pasted all over the internet, the post was then removed, and Beaver has now been forced to apologise for having an opinion.

“I just wanted to jump in and clarify some of my comments that were taken out of context about Gears of War” he said in a statement to IGN that was probably emailed but I kind of like the idea of him standing on grey concrete steps somewhere, dabbing at his eyes, with his wife and kids next to him looking very sombre, and a big crowd of tabloid journalists in front of them and camera flashes going off and stuff.

“First, let me say that I’m a huge fan. It is an epic franchise that has trail-blazed more than a few industry-leading player experiences and mechanics.”

“It is deservedly recognized as a top-tier title. Its success as a property is evidenced by its giant sales and rabid fan base. The industry is far better for Epic’s contributions, and we all owe a great deal of inspiration to their work.”

I’m sure the whole time, he was thinking, “But the story totally sucks”.
