Crysis 3 getting DirectX 11 PC support from day one

PC gamers will be glad to know that, unlike its predecessor, Crysis 3 is intended to have DirectX 11 support from the initial launch stage.

This is an effort from Crytek to emphasise their approach to multiplatform development, as the studio has been tweaking and developing the visually impressive CryEngine 3 for 14 months.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re going to have that,” said Rasmus Hojengaard, Director of Creative Development. “I don’t know if we’ve announced that yet, but obviously we’re going to have DirectX 11 support since we already did it [for Crysis 2]. We basically started from a Crysis 2 DX11 patch, as starting point, and then we developed our technology from there on. We’d be pretty stupid not to capitalize on the technology we did for that and utilizing that from the get-go.”

Crytek recently showed Crysis 3 running on a PC during an unveiling briefing in San Francisco. The demonstration showed the vision of a devastated New York City, overgrown by dense forests and dissected by large swamps.

The console versions weren’t ready to be shown, although Hojengaard highlighted the game’s art design by saying that the game is”actually less reliant on shader technology than, you know, just really good moods, good light setups, and good asset creation.”

The approach also benefits the PC version, which still operates under the philosophy of melting hardware. “We also want to make sure, even if you’re on the PC, even if you don’t have the super powerhouse, nuclear power plant at home, you can still run the game and get a beautiful experience from it.”

Crysis 3 is scheduled for a 2013 release.
