Zeebo, a California-based games manufacturer, has unveiled its ultra low cost console which is aimed specifically at “the next billion” gamers from emerging market countries.
The console itself, which is built by Qualcomm, will include 3G technology and will start shipping for $199 (about R1 900). Prices are however predicted to drop after the console has been more widely distributed.
The package will be distributed with four embedded games and software for a fifth title which will be available for a free download via built in wireless connectivity. Several developers such as Electronic Arts, Capcom, THQ, Gameloft, Glu and Namco Networks are already on board in the hopes that this new technology will reduce piracy rates in emerging nations. EA have already announce plans for Zeebo editions for FIFA 09 and Need for Speed Carbon.
Although gaming stalwarts such as these are hoping to reduce losses normally attributed to piracy in third world nations, little has been released pertaining to the problem of connectivity in these countries. While many countries such as Brazil or China have adequate 3G connectivity to support such a console, the cost of such connections are often very high. There has been no mention yet of how large a download these titles will impose on users internet account.
The Zeebo will launch in Brazil first before being released in other countries. There are no details about a possible South African launch.
