EA have just released their ‘Indie Bundle’ on Steam (and surprisingly neglected Origin), but some aren’t happy regarding the big publisher’s use of the word ‘indie’.
The bundle, which features Warp, Shank, Shank 2, Gatling Gears, Death Spank and it’s follow-up Thong of Virtue, has caught the attention of Markus Persson, more commonly known as Notch.
Notch is known as the progenitor of block-building sensation MineCraft, and he is a firm believer in all things indie.
“EA releases an ‘indie bundle’? That’s not how that works, EA. Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards” Notch tweeted, after hearing news of EA’s bundle.
“Indies are saving gaming. EA is methodically destroying it” he then tweeted.
General manager of Easy Studios, who developed Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield Play4Free (which are published by EA) hit back, saying “@notch If that’s your view, then just stop buying EA games. It’s as easy as that.”
Seems like the whole issue comes down to a matter of personal definition – does a studio being independent make a game indie? Does being published by a large company turn a small project mainstream?
